Get in the Game

by Kelly on September 25th, 2007

It’s that time of year again for football to take over. The leaves are changing and the weather is cooling down. Life begins to revolve around which college and professional teams are playing. Football seems even more important when you live in college town. Restaurants advertise drink specials for the games and sports bars make specials that coincide with the plays. Paula Duffy, author of Incidental Contact, teaches women and rookie sports watchers how to become a sports fan. Duffy also has a daily podcast where she talks about important parts of the game without being overwhelming to help listeners connect more with the sport. She recommends reading the headlines and picking a particular player to follow.

Phones on Planes

by Kelly on September 6th, 2007

The debate is back, should cell phones be allowed to be used on airplanes? More airlines are playing with the idea of allowing them. Testing is being done to see if the cellular reception interferes with the flight’s navigation system. Jet Blue CEO, David Neeleman, said that he would consider texting in the future for the airline. Many passengers are against the use of cell phones in such a small space. Some stipulations of using your cell phone on the plane might include that your ringer must be on silent and the user can only text and listen to voice mail. Allowing for phone conversations would cause even more controversy since there are so many users that tend to talk more loudly while on a cell phone. I don’t agree with cell phone users who argue that a conversation with another passenger is the same as a phone call. The nature of cell phone conversations always seems a bit more dramatic, and the person that refuses to turn their cell phone off until the flight attendant makes them would likely be seated right next to me with VERY important (in flight) cell phone business to attend to.
