What Happened to Mix Tapes?

by Kelly on August 13th, 2007

The cassette tape was developed in the 1960s as an alternative to vinyl records.  A tape made it easy for listeners to record their favorite songs and have them at their fingertips all the time.  Tapes accounted for over half of music sales in the 80s.  Although the cassette tape made recording songs easy, the durability of the tape did not prove to hold up over time.   When a new format to customize music came out listeners left the fad of the mix tape for the next best thing.  Hundreds of millions of cassette tapes were left without use when cd sales proved that new formats of recording music are better than a cheaply made tape.  Now uses of the cassette tape are being seen once again through necklaces, handbags, tape rollers, belt buckles, wallets, etc.
